In my opinion one characteristic of direct play should be the fight: black has (at least in principle) the possibility to counter attacking moves by white. This holds, for example, in direct mates, selfmates, reflexmates, and other aims, but not for helpmates and seriesmovers. Seriesmovers are also not helpplay. Hence they consitute a class of its own. But I accept that, for this tournament, they are included in my section because the number of participating problems was low (only 11). Most of them made pleasant (and not too difficult) solving. None of them approached the complexity and subtility found in the best contemporary fairy chess compositions. I selected 4.

Questo succede, ad esempio, nei matti diretti, automatti, reflex e altro, ma non negli aiutomatti o nei problemi a serie di mosse. Questi ultimi non sono nemmeno problemi aiutati, e pertanto costituiscono un genere a sè stante. Per questo torneo, però, accetto il fatto che siano inclusi dato il basso numero di problemi partecipanti (solo 11). I cannot remember to have seen a directmate Andernach/Madrasi before. Here we have an effectful reciprocal change making full use of both conditions combined.

King´s walks are commonplace in seriesmovers. But here the hesitating walk with the switchbacks during it make a pleasing impression. I like in seriesmovers if the moving piece changes as often as possible.

Le passeggiate di Re sono normali nei problemi a serie. Qui però il cammino esitante con switchback durante la soluzione dà un'impressione piacevole. Mi piacciono problemi a serie in cui il pezzo che muove cambia più spesso possibile.

Cycle of moves making use of Anticirce (the capturing piece is put away) and the Grasshopper (does not guard after moving away). The other threat variation confusing the complete cycle is of doubtful value. Gd6/Gh2 do not have an active function.

A total of 35 problems had to be judged, of which many were small problems featuring echoes or just exploring fairy conditions or pieces. Although most of them were nice to study, such problems could not qualify for the award. I selected four problems which are quite remarkable in depth of idea and in realisation.

A rich strategic program: The first white move passes over b5 und guards future flights, Black anticipatively pins an own piece by moving to a white rebirth square, White enters square b5, the king self-pins, White fires by capturing, thus releasing the rebirth square of the b5 piece which has to be captured by Black, thus mating by rebirth. The perfect analogy in both solutions leaves a strong impression, ond only WPc6 and BPg2 are used to prevent cooks.

Un problema ricco di strategia: la prima mossa bianca passa su b5 e controlla possibili fughe future, il Nero anticipatamente inchioda un proprio pezzo, muovendo su una casa di rinascita bianca, il Bianco occupa la casa b5, il Re si autoinchioda, il Bianco cattura e così facendo libera la casa di rinascita del pezzo b5, che deve essere catturato dal nero e così mattando con la rinascita. L'analogia perfetta in entrambe le soluzioni lascia un'ottima impressione e solo il PBc6 e g2 sono usati per impedire demolizioni.

1st commendation - I lode Cyclically changed promotions g8-e1-h1 (Q-R-B vs. R-B-Q) and two very different ways to reach the concluding mating move. AUW is just a by-product. BPb4 and d3 prevent cooks with strong BQ promotions.

A small but neat group of problems was published in 2007. It is difficult to judge fairy retros, as there are not many problems to compare them with. I hope my judgement makes sense not only for me.

Prize Premio

This author has shown quite a few times now that monochromatic chess, due to the strong limitations of possible moves, makes intricate retros possible. The seemingly open position is in fact, looked at through monochromatic glasses, very hard to reach from the game array position. It took me quite some time to understand this problem, but one is fully rewarded once the details become clear. Take a look at it, you won't be disappointed!

L'autore ha già mostrato diverse volte che gli scacchi monocromatici, a causa delle limitate possibilità di mosse, creano retroanalisi particolarmente intricate.
